Ceremony
Officiant
The person who legally performs the marriage ceremony and signs the marriage license.
An officiant can be a religious leader, a civil officer (judge, justice of the peace), or any person legally ordained in the state. In most US states, online ordination (e.g., Universal Life Church) is legally recognized.
The officiant's two jobs: lead the ceremony and sign the marriage license afterward. Always check state-specific rules — Virginia and Pennsylvania require additional registration; some counties require a residency window.
